joined by Dr. Julia Shaw, psycholoical scientist at University College London,
founder of the Bisexual Research Group, and author of multiple best-selling

We chatted about Dr. Shaw's bi identity and how a lack of research about
bisexuality led to her exploring on her own and coming out, why bisexual people
frequently "want more" (and deserve more!), the privilege of being in a place
and position where coming out is safe (and the responsibility that comes with
it), why psychological research has often marginalized fluid sexuality and why
the field of "positive psychology" offers new promise, how traditional
evolutionary theory comes up short in its explanation of queerness and why
multi-spectrum attraction is not only natural but likely evolutionarily
advantageous, the deep and often-invisible cultural bias toward heterosexuality
that most of us grew up with, how positive Bi+ & queer representation in media
can contribute to meaningful, real-world political change, Dr. Shaw's six stages

We're back with part 2 of our interview with Mark Wilkinson, a PhD candidate at
Lancaster University studying media representation of the LGBT+ community, and
we pick right up where we left off, analyzing the use of the word "bisexual" in
the British press during the 80s, 90s, and through 2017. Mark discusses how the
term became much more widely used during the AIDS/HIV crisis and the
implications of that association, as well as how it shifted to becoming more of
an identity in the 2000s as opposed to a word describing behavior or sexual
activity.
We also chatted about changes happening just in the last few years, like the
rise of the term "pansexual" and a push for more "queer" spaces. Then we talked
about challenging basic assumptions about sexuality, like the fact that gender
is the basis for most labels, as opposed to, for example, what sexual acts turn
you on or your preferred relationship structure. Finally we touched on queer
politics and the power of linguistics to both divide and unite.

Though the bisexual/fluid community has always existed, the word "bisexual" has
evolved significantly in popular usage over the last 60 years. Mark Wilkinson, a
PhD candidate at Lancaster University, has been studying media representation of
the LGBT+ community and the discursive construction of identity & community,
using linguistics to understand how queer people identify themselves over the
years -- and how others identify our community in the press.
In part one of this two part interview, we discussed Mark's paper, "Bisexual
Oysters", which analyzes how the word "bisexual" was used in The Times (of
London) over the past six decades. In the 50s, 60s, and 70s, it was not used
nearly as much as today, and it often did not describe sexuality but rather
other aspects of gender or presentation, as well as androgyny, "co-ed" spaces,
or "unisex" objects. Mark also discusses the prevalence of fictional characters
as opposed to real people being described as "bisexual", contributing to bi
erasure and invisibility. We also chatted about when and why these semantics are
important -- especially to unite in solidarity for political purposes -- and
when and why it's important to remember that "bisexuality" is not a universal
identity across time and space, but rather a discursive construction that
emerged at a particular time, location, and moment in our culture.

celebrate it -- and that's exactly what Benjamin Perry, a Bi+ Minister as Middle
Church in New York City, is doing. In this episode we chatted about Benjamin's
journey toward a bisexual identity, opening up to his wife and the experience of
being married and bi, how he found his calling in theology and began to blend it
with his burgeoning queerness, coming out in a religious community (a
surprisingly positive experience for him), and the inclusive mission of Middle
Church and how it reflects God's queerness. We also discussed the possibility
that Jesus and his disciples were bisexual/fluid/queer, what the backlash to
this "controversial" idea tells us about religious fundamentalism, and why
queerness should not just be "acceptable" among the faithful but why it's
actually vital to understanding God's love, community, and compassion.

We've talked a lot about fluidity among straight-identified people in the past
-- this season, we're interviewing multiple gay-identified men who experience
sexual fluidity or who are breaking down the gender binary within the gay

Russian-born Australian author, poetess, and Bi+ activist based in Sydney.
Anna's book, "Bi & Prejudice", a memoir about her bisexual journey, was recently
published by Debut Books, and she also runs the "Bi & Prejudice" Instagram
space.
Anna's story is both specific and universal -- her multiple identities affected
her experience in a unique way, but her Bi+ journey hits a lot of common themes
that many of us have experienced. We chatted about her book and Instagram space,
how growing up in a conservative & pro-authoritarian family affected her
identity and allowed her to repress her bisexuality for a long time, how moving
to Sydney opened her up to new people and experiences, the ways that all her
relationships have "queered" since coming out (not just romantic relationships),
her experience with fluid sexuality while identifying as "straight", why she
chose to come out to her friends when she did but has not yet come out to her
parents (although she has "tested the waters"), why she set an intention to
attend more play parties and meet queer & poly people in a sex-positive space,

Jones-Hennin, a civil rights and LGBT+ activist for over six decades, and his

Ever scoffed at the idea of telling yourself you look hot in the mirror? What if
it actually works? We chatted with Bi+ activist and soon-to-be-author Vaneet
Mehta about how to accept external validation and then repeat it and internalize
it until it becomes a closed loop of confidence.
Like many Bi+ people, Vaneet struggled for years to identify and accept his
bisexuality, and on top of that struggled within the strict confines of
masculinity in the predominantly Indian/South-Asian community of Southall, West
London. We talked about how Vaneet gained confidence in his identity and came
out in that environment, how it affected his mental health (TRIGGER WARNING:
talk of suicide and suicidal ideation), finding a queer community with common
interests outside of queerness to "bridge the gap" (like "Gaymers"), the book
he's writing on bisexual men, why he created the hashtag #BisexualMenExist, and
the journey from self-discovery to paying it forward by helping others.

We've all dealt with the stereotype that bisexual people are confused. But
what's so bad about confusion?? The world is complicated!
We're back with Jen Winston (she/they), aka @Jenerous, talking about greed,
confusion, and all the other "negative" stereotypes about Bi+ people that we
love to play into. We discussed Jen's new book GREEDY: NOTES FROM A BISEXUAL WHO
WANTS TO MUCH (out Oct 5!), in which they go beyond bi-myth-busting, question
the very nature of stereotypes and why we often consider them bi-phobic, and
present their authentic, messy, personal bi narrative in a funny, relatable, and
honest memoir.
We also talked about the gender spectrum (a lot...), non-binary and transgender
identities (and their intersection with bisexuality), Jen's non-binary identity

In this episode, we discussed how and why Shiri wrote her book, why the rigid
structure of masculinity harms men and how bisexuality offers men an opportunity
to reimagine masculinity, why bi visibility is the bare minimum and does not
equal acceptance, the ubiquitous and often-invisible bi-phobia in our society --
and television's frequent avoidance of bi-phobia when representing bisexuality,
and what kind of bi representation Shiri would like to see on TV (more "messy
bisexuals" please!).

We've often talked about the solidarity and understanding shared by the bi and
trans communities, but there's also a lot of overlap -- many bisexual people are
trans or non-binary, and vice-versa. Today, we're spotlighting three bi trans
men living in the UK, interviewed by guest-host Gabriel Novo.
Gabriel spoke with Max, a psychotherapist in training; Ash, who's working to
make the funeral industry more inclusive for queer and trans folks; and Etienne,
an audio engineer who works in film and television. They discussed how and when
these men realized they were trans and bisexual (sometimes not at the same
time), the coming-out process for each, the value of supportive friends and
family (and therapy!), how their bi and trans identities intersect and influence
each other, what it's like to transition both emotionally and practically within
the UK healthcare system, shifting perspectives and feelings on masculinity
during transition, how various facets of identity can affect one's sense of
self, TERFs (but only briefly, because they're scary and dumb), the effects of
the pandemic on their identities and transitions, and much more!

Get ready for a hopeful, optimistic episodes about the casual cruelty of our
heteronormative society!
I spoke to my friend Gabriel Novo, aka the "Bisexual Nomad", a Bi+ writer,
artist and activist currently living in the UK (and another Birequest alum!). We
spoke about bisexual communities we've found (or struggled to find...), how
those personal connections helped us go from knowing we "like everyone" to fully
embracing a "bisexual" identity, Gabriel's previous marriage to a woman and the
difficulties of not being fully out, the "life-changing" mental health benefits
of coming out (and the privilege of being able to), the struggle of remaining in
the closet at work to protect your livelihood, Gabriel's experience with a
cancer diagnosis and treatment and how it related to his queer journey, how to
navigate poly relationships and communicate clearly, and the importance of
mutual aid and being there to support our chosen queer families.
We also dove into the "casual cruelty of heteronormativity", the harmful
constraints of masculinity, the violence resulting from conformity and
repression, the difficulty of shaking off expectations (and self-criticism when
we play into them), detoxing from being in the closet and from het-masculinity
as we become "more" queer, and most importantly the positive benefits of
interrogating all those issues, both for ourselves and for our community, as
part of a commitment to dismantling patriarchy and white supremacy. It's all
possible if we lead with empathy.
Then we answered some listener-submitted questions about masculinity, fear of
rejection, being open about our feelings, and media we're consuming with bi
themes. So this episode covers... a lot!

Leading with Empathy featuring Gabriel Novo

Queerness isn't without its challenges -- many of them serious and potentially
harmful -- but at the same time, it's also a gift, one that forces us to look
inward and get to know ourselves, one that connects us to a likeminded and
supportive community, and one that helps us build the tools to survive and
thrive as we move through the varied challenges life throws at us.
In our season 3 premiere, Alex is back and joins Rob to discuss our Pride
experiences back in June, how the pansexual movement has been beneficial in
making bisexuality more inclusive, the wide spectrum of gender non-binary
identities (and how those with cis-passing privilege can use it in solidarity),
the special relationship between bisexuality and trans/non-binary identities
(yes, again), and the trouble with "chasing". We're also answering listener
questions! This week we answered Qs about bi-romantic aces, what "bi-dentifiers"
we use in the world to signal our bisexuality or queerness, what media is in our

Queerness is a Gift

In our season two finale, Two Bi Guys presents: Three Bi (Married) Guys!
The experience of bisexual people in straight-appearing marriages is one of the
most prevalent and yet still invisible among the queer community. Bi+ men are
even less likely to be out than women, sometimes keeping the secret from their
wives. In this extended episode, Rob interviews three Bi+ men who are (or have
been) married to women, plus one of their wives (who is also bisexual), about
the challenges and joys of this unique experience. We'll meet Austin from Ohio,
who grew up in a conservative Mennonite culture that repressed his same-sex
attractions for years; Rene from Chicago, a first-generation Mexican-American bi
guy who had a perfect "Disney family" before coming out to his wife; and Howard
and Elizabeth from New York, who skipped a few steps by meeting at a bisexual
play party and continue to practice ethical non-monogamy.
We discussed how they all came to understand their bisexuality, why and how the
men came out to their wives (or future-wives), how their wives dealt with the
news and how the relationship moved forward (or didn't), why and how some of
them stuck with monogamy while others negotiated opening things up, the
importance of queer community within and outside the marriage, biphobia and
bi-erasure from friends and family, how their identity affected their kids, and
the many other aspects of marriage that intersect with a fluid sexuality.
